Last Thursday, the Grant County Republicans welcomed Chris Cargill as their special speaker. Chris is the Eastern Washington Director of the Washington Policy Center (WPC), a Washington State-based conservative “think tank.” Mr. Cargill focused his comments on such issues as the increased spending since 2012 on state public education and the lack of measurable, positive, educational results; the ruling by the State Supreme Court that the legislature has “fully funded” public education; efforts by the state teachers’ union to close Washington’s 10 charter schools; lack of governmental transparency in public sector union salary negotiations; attempts by certain groups to force removal of the Snake River dams and the costly nature of such proposals; forced unionization of public sector workers; the proposed road usage charge; and other topics. Chris’s presentation seemed well-received by those in attendance and many asked to be included on the WPC’s mailing list.

During the business meeting that followed, the group voted to encourage the public to sign the petitions and support the following, proposed state-wide initiatives to the people: I-1608, which will make public the collective bargaining process of pubic-sector unions and; I-1626, the “Bring Back our $30 Tabs” Initiative.

Initiatives to the People which the group unanimously voted to oppose and discourage any public support for include the following: I-1631, the disguised carbon tax therein called “pollution fees;” I-1616, which is an attempt to create a state income tax and thereby circumvent state law against such (and rejected by voters multiple times in the past); I-1600, which would create a single-payer health-care insurance program in Washington State and; I-1639, seen by the Grant County GOP as a blatant attempt to tear away at our rights under our federal constitution’s 2ndAmendment.

Other Initiatives to the People will be considered during the group’s next meeting. The Grant County GOP will also be gathering to interview GOP candidates on June 16th. That meeting will provide an avenue for candidate nominations and endorsements for the upcoming 2018 elections. The Grant County GOP encourages all Grant County citizens to make sure they are registered to vote and to participate in the upcoming primary and general elections. For more information go to Facebook
